Adani Transmission Ltd (ATL) has completed one of India’s largest intrastate transmission lines, in Uttar Pradesh.

In a release, ATL, part of the diversified Adani Group, said that its subsidiary “Ghatampur Transmission Ltd” completed an intrastate line spanning 897 ckm, including 799 ckm of 765kV and 98 ckm of 400kV lines. The entire transmission system includes four bay extensions (of 765kV and 400kV) at Agra, Greater Noida and Hapur.

The Ghatampur project includes the 765kV single-circuit Ghatampur-Hapur transmission line of 411 km, which is one of the longest HVAC transmission lines in the country. It will connect the Ghatampur thermal power plant in central Uttar Pradesh to the 765/400kV Hapur substation in the western part of the state.

ATL clinched the Ghatampur project in June 2018 under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) route. It will be developed in the build-own-operate-maintain (BOOM) mode under a concession period of 35 years.

ATL’s current power transmission portfolio is over 18,300 ckm (operational and under-construction). The company has targeted to attain 20,000 ckm by 2022.

Commitment to the nation

Anil Sardana, MD & CEO, Adani Transmission Ltd “Adani Transmission is constantly evolving into a significant player in Indian grid networks. Completion of this large project even during the Covid pandemic is a significant achievement. This proves ATL’s commitment to nation building and to becoming a world class leader in creating long-term sustainable value for our stakeholders. This project will improve reliability, operational efficiencyand the robustness of UP’s power system network, especially benefitting the areas of Kanpur, Agra, Greater Noida and Hapur.”

Project objective

The transmission project will evacuate power from the upcoming 3×660-mw Ghatampur thermal power plant, being developed by Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd, which is a 51:49 joint venture between NLC India (formerly Neyveli Lignite Corporation) and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam.

Challenges faced

The transmission line passes through severe right of way (ROW) challenged urban areas and also through highly undulated ravine topography. One of the biggest challenges surpassed by GTL was the uncertainty caused by the COVID pandemic which made deployment of the workforce difficult. GTL exhibited world-class quality standards, effective project management, and adhered to all safety and COVID protocol to successfully complete the project, the release by ATL said.
