Breakdown-free performance by two EHV lines in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh

Two extra high voltage (EHV) lines supplying electricity to Jabalpur city in Madhya Pradesh have created a record of a continuous breakdown-free performance of 1,500 days, which is over four years.

In a release, state transco Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Ltd (MPPTCL) said that the two lines are the 132kV Jabalpur-Bargi Power House line and the 132kV Jabalpur-Pangar line.

The Jabalpur-Bargi line was commissioned in 1988 while the Jabalpur-Pangar line (earlier known as Katni Line) was energized on June 1, 1964. The latter, despite being over six decades old, continues to perform with remarkable reliability, the MPPTCL release said.

This achievement in Jabalpur is part of the broader success of 593 EHV transmission lines operated by MPPTCL across the state, which have ensured uninterrupted power transmission despite natural challenges such as storms, heavy rainfall, and lightning.

Madhya Pradesh Energy Minister, Pradyuman Singh Tomar, congratulated the state transco on this achievement and said that it reflects the dedication, technical competence, maintenance skills, and teamwork of the company’s engineers, technical staff, and outsourced personnel.

Regular line patrolling, thermovision inspections, special monitoring of sensitive locations, pre-monsoon maintenance drives, continuous SCADA-based monitoring, effective management of transmission corridors, timely tree trimming and vegetation control, and preventive maintenance of insulators, conductors, and other transmission hardware have all played a significant role in preventing breakdowns and ensuring reliable power transmission across Jabalpur and the rest of Madhya Pradesh, the release added.

Shyampur substation augmented

In a recent development, MPPTCL commissioned an additional 50 MVA transformer at the 132kV Shyampur substation in Sehore district, taking the total capacity at the substation to 140 MVA, and that of the district to 2,557 MVA.

This new 50 MVA transformer is the third at the Shyampur substation and the 26th EHV transformer in all of Sehore district. MPPTCL operates 11 substations in the Sehore district, including the 400kV Ashta, 220kV Budhini substation and several 132kV installations.

Cumulative capacity

MPPTCL manages electricity transmission through a network of 417 EHV substations statewide, comprising 14 substations at the 400kV level, 88 substations at 220kV, and 315 substations at 132 kV. The company currently operates 1,053 power transformers across Madhya Pradesh, including 41 transformers at 400kV, 220 transformers at 220kV and 792 transformers at 132kV voltage levels. The addition of the 50 MVA transformer at Shyampur has increased MP Transco’s overall transformation capacity to 85,298 MVA, further strengthening the state’s power transmission system and its capability to meet rising electricity demand, the release noted.
