Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has sought suggestions from power sector utilities, covering generation, transmission and distribution, on improving reliability and safety of power sector equipment.
CEA has asked power utilities to furnish these suggestions and other information within 15 days of its communication dated October 3, 2025.
Apart from suggestions, CEA has sought information on various other aspects like issues faced regarding quality of equipment, installation or during the operation of equipment, such as transformers, switchgear, conductors, etc.
CEA has also asked utilities to furnish information on detailed steps taken by utilities to improve quality, as well as enforcement measures or monitoring mechanisms adopted by utilities.
The role of CEA
This communication by CEA is in response to a meeting held under the chairmanship of the Advisor to Prime Minister, on July 15, 2025, regarding quality infrastructure projects. In compliance with the discussions held during the said meeting, Secretary (Power) highlighted the importance of strengthening quality assurance, monitoring, assessment, enforcement and adoption of technology (including drone-based monitoring), in the power sector.
Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has sought suggestions and feedback from utilities as CEA is empowered to specify regulations relating to technical standards for construction, operation and maintenance of electrical plants and transmission lines, as well as grid standards and safety requirements. These regulations mandate that equipment and installations conform to relevant national or international standards.
In addition, a Standardisation Cell of the Union power ministry has been established in the Central Electricity Authority to facilitate the adoption of Indian standards, identification of new technologies, and strengthening of compliance framework.
