Genus Power sees accelerated smart metering project execution in Q3FY26

Genus Power Infrastructures Ltd witnessed accelerated execution of its smart metering projects under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), during the third quarter (Q3: October to December) of FY26.

During Q3FY26, Genus Power installed 23.3 lakh smart meters with respect to RDSS projects where Genus is the Advanced Metering Infrastructure Service Provider (AMISP).

For the whole of FY26, Genus expects to install around 80-90 lakh smart meters under RDSS with the cumulative 9MFY26 achievement touching around 58 lakh smart meters.

According to the senior management, speaking at a recent investor conference, Genus Power has targeted to install 1 crore (100 lakh) smart meters during FY27, once again with respect to its own AMISP projects under RDSS.

As reported by tndindia.com on February 11, 2026, Genus recently crossed the 1-crore milestone with respect to smart meters relating to its own AMISP projects under RDSS. Of these 1 crore meters, around 70 lakh meters have reached Operational Go-Live (OGL) status, implying commencement of invoicing upon successful completion of Site Acceptance Test (SAT).

Order book

As of December 31, 2025, Genus Power’s order book stood at around Rs.27,000 crore, comprising mainly the company’s own AMISP projects under RDSS, entailing the rollout of around 2.75 crore meters. This order book will be executed over the next three years.

According to Jitendra Kumar Agarwal, Joint Managing Director, Genus Power, “The company’s order book remains robust at approximately Rs.27,000 crore (net of taxes) attributable primarily to Genus’s own AMISP projects covering around 2.75 crore smart meters, providing multi-year execution and annuity revenue visibility over 8–10 year concession periods. Around 80% of AMISP revenues accrue directly to Genus, underscoring the quality and profitability of the order book. Manufacturing capacity has been scaled to over 18 million meters annually, supported by facilities in Jaipur, Haridwar and the recently commissioned Guwahati plant, ensuring readiness for sustained high-volume execution.”

Bidding pipeline

The Genus Power management expects that the bidding pipeline for smart metering projects is around Rs.1,20,000 crore involving 15 crore smart meters. These would be tendered progressively over the next two years.

In the near term, Genus Power expects 50 million (or 5 crore) smart meters to be tendered. This would include the mega 3-crore meter tender in Tamil Nadu, around 0.5 crore (50 million) by Delhi (BSES) discoms, and the remaining in Punjab and Haryana.

Cumulative status

According to official government statistics, as of January 31, 2026, a total of 19.78 crore consumer smart meters were sanctioned under RDSS. Of these, tenders corresponding to 12.43 crore meters were awarded. The number of installations as of given date stood at 4.07 crore. These figures represent consumer smart meters alone. RDSS also involves distribution transformer (DT) meters and feeder meters but with a very low relative share.

It may be mentioned that private discoms, such as those in Delhi, Odisha and Mumbai, are deploying smart metering, but outside the purview of RDSS. This Centrally-sponsored scheme pertains to state government-owned power distribution companies (discoms) and power departments. Nevertheless, some states, like Karnataka and Telangana, have not yet come under the purview of RDSS.

Of the 4.07 crore RDSS-backed consumer smart meter installed as of January 31, 2026, Maharashtra had the highest share, at 21.2 per cent, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 16.5 per cent.
