The Heavy Engineering business vertical of L&T has achieved yet another milestone by dispatching the eighth steam generator for India’s 700 MWe pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) fleet civil nuclear power programme.
In a release, L&T said that this generator was dispatched three months ahead of the contractual delivery schedule.
Manufactured at L&T’s state-of-the-art Heavy Engineering Complex at Hazira in Gujarat, the steam generator is among the most critical components of a nuclear power plant. The early delivery reflects L&T’s continued commitment to safety, quality and execution excellence while supporting India’s rapidly expanding nuclear energy programme, the release said.
The milestone comes at a pivotal time in India’s clean energy transition journey. With the Government of India accelerating nuclear capacity addition to strengthen energy security, support industrial growth, enable AI and digital infrastructure and meet long-term decarbonisation goals, timely delivery of critical nuclear island equipment remains an imperative.
L&T’s achievement reinforces the strength of India’s indigenous nuclear manufacturing ecosystem and its readiness to support one of the world’s largest civil nuclear expansion programme.
A steam generator is a heat exchanger that converts water into steam making use of the heat produced in the nuclear core.
Consistently ahead of schedule
Commenting on this, Anil V Parab, Whole-Time Director & Senior EVP – Manufacturing, L&T, said: “L&T continues to set industry benchmarks. The dispatch of all eight Steam Generators ahead of contractual delivery schedules underscores our unwavering commitment to nuclear safety and manufacturing excellence. It stands as a testament to our engineering capability to fast-track India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision of scaling nuclear power generation to 100 GWe. We remain committed to the long-term partnership with NPCIL in accelerating India’s transition to clean energy”.
Key contributor
For over six decades, L&T has been a key contributor to India’s nuclear power programme, manufacturing critical equipment including steam generators, reactor headers, pressurisers, end shields, Calandrias and fast breeder reactor components. L&T’s continued investments in advanced manufacturing technologies, automation and specialised nuclear fabrication capabilities have established one of the world’s most comprehensive nuclear manufacturing ecosystems, the release added.
Background
In April 2021, L&T won the mandate to supply 12 steam generators as part of the nuclear fleet-mode programme involving construction of ten units of 700 MWe PHWRs with indigenous technology. The critical equipment of the nuclear island of a nuclear power plant includes steam generators, reactor headers and pressurizers. The first steam generator was manufactured in 33 months and was dispatched in March 2024, twelve months ahead of schedule. The seventh steam generator, immediately preceding that discussed in this story, was dispatched in April 2026.
