Marginal decline in BHEL’s FY23 order inflow

New order inflows of Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) in FY23 were marginally lower than those in FY22.

According to an investor presentation filed on stock exchanges, BHEL’s new order inflows in FY23 stood at Rs.23,548 crore, around 0.6 percent lower than the comparable Rs.23,693 crore in FY22.

What is most striking is that the distribution of new order inflows in FY23 was inclined more towards non-power businesses – namely industry and exports.

The share of the power sector in the FY23 order inflow dropped to 56.7 percent in FY23 from 75.7 percent in FY22. Correspondingly, the share of the industry rose from 23.9 percent in FY22 to 40.5 percent in FY23. Exports also commanded a higher share – 2.8 percent in FY23 as against 0.4 percent in FY22.

The higher share of “industry” reflects the large number of orders in areas like defense, railways, and power transmission. For instance, in the defense sector, BHEL booked its highest-ever annual order inflow, in FY23.

In the power transmission sector, PGCIL placed some important orders on BHEL in FY23. These included the supply and commissioning of 500 MVA, 765kV power transformers at Khavda (Gujarat) and Fatehgarh (Rajasthan), as well as EPC works of the Khavda-2 pooling station (KPS2) in Gujarat. Incidentally, both these orders were placed in Q4 of FY23.

In FY23, BHEL received orders for transformers with an aggregate capacity of 37,500 MVA, which was two and a half times of that in FY22.

In the power sector, BHEL achieved a capacity addition of 1,580 MW worth of generation plants – both conventional and renewable. In Q4 of FY23 alone, BHEL commissioned four supercritical power generation units – one of 800 MW and three of 660 MW.

In terms of power sector orders in FY23, a significant achievement was the EPC order from NTPC for its 2×660-mw Talcher power plant in Odisha. This was the only EPC tender for a thermal power plant in the past three years, a BHEL release observed.

Outstanding order book

As of March 31, 2023, BHEL’s outstanding order book position was Rs.91,336 crore. Nearly 79 percent of this is related to power sector orders. Another 16 percent was from the industry segment while the remaining 5 percent constituted export orders.
