State transco Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Ltd (MPPTCL) announced that it has doubled the transformation capacity at the 132/33kV Rahatgarh substation in Sagar district.
In a release, MPPTCL said that an additional 40-MVA transformer has now been installed at the Rahatgarh substation, doubling its capacity to 80 MVA from 40 MVA earlier.
Significantly, the new addition is a 23-year old power transformer that was reconditioned through in-house expertise.
The enhancement of capacity at the Rahatgarh substation is to meet the anticipated rise in electricity demand during the upcoming Rabi season. Further, in the event of maintenance or a technical problem affecting one transformer, the availability of the second will facilitate the management of the power supply system, the release noted.
Reconditioned transformer
The 40-MVA power transformer installed at Rahatgarh is around 23 years old and was previously deployed at the Mansakra (Jabalpur district) and Amarpatan (Maihar district) substations.
The process of reconditioning, which was done with MPPTCL’s in-house expertise, involved replacing gaskets, rectifying oil leakages at various points and carrying out vacuum treatment in accordance with the prescribed technical procedures. The transformer’s insulating oil was also replaced, and the necessary technical checks related to the oil and insulation were conducted.

MPPTCL network
With the addition of the reconditioned transformer at Rahatgarh, MPPTCL continues to strengthen its transmission infrastructure to meet the state’s growing electricity demand. The company operates a network of 418 extra high tension (EHT) substations, with a total installed transformation capacity of 85,628 MVA, supporting reliable power transmission across Madhya Pradesh, the release added.
