MPPTCL energizes new 132kV Bilaua substation, over 70,000 consumers set to benefit

State transco Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Ltd (MPPTCL) recently commissioned a new 132kV substation at Bilaua in Gwalior district. This new installation is expected to benefit over 70,000 electricity consumers.

The new 132kV substation, equipped with transformation capacity of 50 MVA, has taken the total count of substations in Madhya Pradesh to 418 and that of 132kV substations to 316.

According to Pradyuman Singh Tomar, Energy Minister, Madhya Pradesh, this addition has given fresh strength to the state’s transmission system. The minister said that transmission capacity in Madhya Pradesh is being continuously expanded in view of the state’s growing electricity demand. The new substation will help ensure reliable power supply to industrial areas and rural regions, and will also help meet future demand. He congratulated the engineers and staff of MPPTCL on this achievement, a state transco release observed.

As soon as the substation was commissioned, load supply was successfully started on two 33kV industrial feeders. In all, power will be supplied to state power discom Madhya Pradesh Madhya Kshetra Vidyut Vitaran Company Ltd (MPMKVVCL) through four 33 kV feeders. This will benefit around 70,000 consumers, including 119 industrial and commercial units, domestic and agricultural consumers in about 60 villages, two municipal councils, and a training centre of Border Security Force (BSF).

As of around October 1, 2026, MPPTCL had a total of 1,057 power transformers spread across 418 substations, with a total transformation capacity of 85,538 MVA, or around 85 GVA. (See table).

Major interstate line repaired

In an independent development, MPPTCL engineers carried out emergency repairs on the 220kV interstate (ISTS) line running from Auraiya in Uttar Pradesh to Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh. This line plays a crucial role in energizing the 220kV substations catering to the Mehgaon and Malanpur industrial areas in the Gwalior region. The maintenance of this ISTS line, owned by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL), falls under the purview of MPPTCL, it is learnt.

During recent heavy rain and storms, the hardware on two towers near Birkhadi village in Gohad tehsil of Bhind district was damaged, and a mid-span joint failed. To locate the fault along the roughly 145 km line, the team carried out intensive patrolling, after which the fault location was identified.

Continuous rain, strong winds and mud made it difficult to reach the towers. The standing crops also posed practical right-of-way (ROW) challenges. Under these conditions, a repair plan was drawn up and the work began.

Under the guidance of senior MPPTCL officials, repairs were successfully carried out and the line was restored after 67 hours of round-the-clock effort. The repairs included replacing the damaged disc insulators on both towers, lowering the OPGW and conductor, and repairing the mid-span joint. These technical tasks were carried out at a height of about 45m in adverse weather, a release by MPPTCL noted.
