MPPTCL retires transformer after 45 years of useful service

 

Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Ltd (MPPTCL) recently retired a transformer after 45 years of useful service.

A release by MPPTCL said that a 120 MVA transformer, installed way back in 1978, at the 220kV substation of South Zone Indore was retired and replaced by a new transformer with capacity of 160 MVA.

According to Madhya Pradesh Energy Minister Pradyuman Singh Tomar, the retired transformer has created a record of providing continuous service for 45 years, thanks to the excellent preventive maintenance and continuous monitoring of the transformer. The minister also congratulated the MPPTCL personnel for maintaining the old transformer for such a long time without any major outage since its commissioning.

The now-retired transformer was installed in 220kV substation of South Zone, Indore, for electricity transmission in and around Indore city. The new transformer of 160 MVA has enhanced the transformation capacity of the South Zone, Indore substation.

According to P.S. Raghav, Superintending Engineer, MPPTCL, the working life of power transformers is generally considered to be 25 years. However, the MP state utility has succeeded in increasing its working life by preventive maintenance and continuous monitoring of the power transformer — the most sensitive equipment of a substation — and has crossed a milestone.

The energization of the new power transformer will benefit the electricity consumers connected to the 132kV substations at Rau, Indore West (Navdapant), Electronics Complex, Satyasai, Mahalakshmi, Ghata Vilod, Simrol substations in Indore and nearby areas.

With the increase in the capacity of this substation, the transmission capacity of Indore city has increased to 7,766 MVA, which is highest among the all metros of Madhya Pradesh, the release said.
