NTPC-REL commissions its first solar plant

NTPC-Renewable Energy Ltd (NTPC-REL) has commissioned its first-ever solar power project.

In a release, NTPC said that the first solar project of NTPC-REL, located at Chhattargarh in Rajasthan declared commercial operation of 70-mw of the total installed capacity of 150 mw, on February 21, 2024.

The full capacity is expected to be commissioned by March 2024.  This project was won under SECI-Tranche III and the beneficiary of this project is Rajasthan.

At present, NTPC-REL has 17 projects under execution, with a total capacity exceeding 6,000 mw.

With this, NTPC Group installed capacity has reached 73,958 mw. NTPC Group includes NTPC Ltd and its subsidiaries.

This project is designed to annually generate 370 million units (MU or million kwh) of energy per year, sufficient for 60,000 households, while also saving 3 lakh tonnes of CO2 emissions every year and conserving 1,000 million tonnes of water per year, NTPC said.

It may be noted that NTPC Group has renewable energy assets, owned by NTPC Ltd (the parent company) and its subsidiary NTPC-REL.

NTPC-REL was incorporated in October 2020 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC Ltd, to carry out renewable energy business.

Besides, in April 2022, NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) was also incorporated as a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC Ltd. NGEL’s role would be to acquire operational renewable energy assets of NTPC Ltd and NTPC-REL, with a view to monetize these assets. It is reliably learnt that NGEL would be soon launching its initial public offer (IPO) and has already received approval from Department of Investment & Public Asset Management (DIPAM) – a department under the Union finance ministry — for the same.
