SJVN’s Buxar thermal power project records progress

SJVN’s under-construction 1,320-mw thermal power project in Bihar has recorded progress, a release from SJVN said.

On July 25, 2022, Nand Lal Sharma, CMD, SJVN, inaugurated the commissioning of the electric overhead traveler (EOT) crane and erection of low-pressure heater (LP Heater#6) at the upcoming thermal power project coming up in Bihar’s Buxar district.

The CMD also took a detailed review of the construction and erection activities at various project components.

The project progress is in full swing. Structure and equipment erection activities at Boiler-I, STG-1, Boiler-II, chimney and other balance of plant works are in advanced stages of construction.

The ceiling girder lifting of Boiler#1 has been completed and erection works of turbine & generator have further gained momentum. The company’s focus now would be on achieving the major milestone of ceiling girder lifting of Boiler#2 and hydro test of Boiler#1.

The 1,320-mw Buxar thermal power project, equipped with two supercritical units of 660-mw each, is being implemented by SJVN’s wholly-owned subsidiary SJVN Thermal Pvt Ltd at an estimated cost of Rs 10,439.09 crore.

The two units of the project are scheduled to be commissioned by June 2023 and January 2024 respectively.  On commissioning, the project will generate 9828.72 million kwh annually.

Background

In January 2013, SJVN signed an MoU with Bihar State Power Holding Company Ltd and Bihar Power Infrastructure Company for setting up the Buxar thermal power plant in village Chausa, Buxar district, Bihar.

SJVN took over Buxar Bijli Company Pvt Ltd (the erstwhile developer of the Buxar project) in July 2013 and changed its name to SJVN Thermal Pvt Ltd (a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN Ltd) in October 2013. Buxar Bijli Company Ltd, according to information available with T&D India, was promoted by Bihar Power Infrastructure Company Ltd, in turn a joint venture between Bihar State Electricity Board (now known as Bihar State Power Holding Company Ltd) and Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Ltd (IL&FS).
