Tata Power is keen to explore opportunities in the intrastate transmission system (InSTS) space, under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) framework.
In a recent media interaction, Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power, said that Tata Power would be interested in exploring opportunities in the InSTS space under the TBCB framework.
Dr Sinha also said that Tata Power recently won an intrastate project in Karnataka, under the TBCB mode, which is independently learnt to be the Ryapte scheme. Ryapte would be the third greenfield intrastate-TBCB scheme for Tata Power, following the Jalpura-Khurja project in Uttar Pradesh (currently under construction) and the Jejuri-Hinjewadi project in Maharashtra that was formally acquired in January 2026.
On the Jejuri-Hinjewadi project, the Tata Power top official said that project implementation was underway with major contracts awarded.
For Tata Power, FY26 was an eventful year marking the full completion of two interstate-TBCB schemes – South East UP Power Transmission Company Ltd (SEUPPTCL) and Northern Region System Strengthening Scheme-XXXVI (NRSSS-XXXVI) – adding 1,823 ckm to the company’s operational portfolio during the year.
In a release, Tata Power said that completion of SEUPPTCL marks a major milestone for Uttar Pradesh’s transmission infrastructure. The total network under SEUPPTCL now includes three 765kV lines spanning 951 ckm, fourteen 400kV lines covering 566 ckm and three 765/400kV substations with an aggregate transformation capacity of 3,460 MVA.
It may be noted that both SEUPPTCL and NRSSS-XXXVI are owned by Resurgent Power Ventures, in which Tata Power has 26 per cent equity stake. Both the projects were acquired by their erstwhile owners under a corporate debt resolution plan.
Greenfield ISTS projects
Tata Power currently has three interstate transmission system (ISTS) projects acquired through the TBCB route, and in which the company has 100 per cent equity. These are incorporated under TP Bikaner III Neemrana II Transmission Ltd, TP Paradeep Transmission Ltd and TP Gopalpur Transmission Ltd. Responding to a query on these projects, Dr. Praveer Sinha said that the Bikaner-Neemrana project is progressing well and expected to commission by September 2026. On the Odisha-located Paradeep and Gopalpur projects, the Tata Power top official noted that while CERC has issued the transmission licence for Paradeep, that for the Gopalpur project was awaited. Both the projects are expected to commission by end of FY28 (March 31, 2028), by current estimates.
Overall portfolio
As of March 31, 2026, Tata Power had a total operational portfolio of 5,562 ckm that included contributions from the company’s Mumbai transmission network, Powerlinks — Tata Power’s joint venture with Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) and two TBCB projects of Resurgent Power Ventures. As of same date, the company’s under-construction portfolio covered five projects – all greenfield TBCB projects – aggregating 1,841 ckm. (See Table 2).
By current thinking, Tata Power’s operational portfolio will increase by 856 ckm by end of FY27, to reach 6,418 ckm. By end of FY28, another 987 ckm are expected to be added taking the overall operational transmission portfolio to over 7,400 ckm.
