Telangana commands highest share of 220kV lines commissioned in FY22

The state power transmission utility of Telangana has commissioned the maximum quantum of 220kV lines amongst all state utilities, during FY22 so far, the latest report by Central Electricity Authority (CEA) suggests.

A special T&D India study based on CEA’s latest statistics indicates that Transmission Corporation of Telangana Ltd (popularly known as TSTRANSCO) completed 1,375 ckm of 220kV lines during the first five months (April to August) of FY22.

This represented around 57 per cent of the total quantum of 220kV power lines commissioned by state transmission utilities, which stood at 2,428 ckm.

TSTRANSCO commissioned a total of 33 transmission line elements in the said period. These elements included both new lines and balance portion of partly-commissioned lines.

Some major lines completed by TSTRANSCO in the period included:

Earning a distant second spot was Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (MPPTCL) that commissioned 284 ckm of new 220kV lines, albeit through just two projects. It is interesting to note that both these transmission lines were of the “DCDS” type, which means “double circuit, double stringing”.  DCDS means that the transmission towers are designed to carry two circuits and both circuits have been stringed.

State transmission utilities to have commissioned over 100 ckm of 220kV lines in the April-August period of FY22 included Maharashtra (MSTECL, 181 ckm); Uttar Pradesh (UPPTCL, 171 ckm); and Gujarat (GETCO, 157 ckm).

It may be mentioned that TANTRANSCO, the state power transmission utility of Tamil Nadu, commissioned 117 ckm of 230kV lines. This has not been taken into consideration in the above 220kV-oriented calculation.

Overall performance

In the first five months (April to August) of FY22, a total of 5,650 ckm of transmission lines were commissioned – across all ownership groups and voltage classes. This achievement however fell short of the 12,218 ckm planned for the period. Central PSUs – PGCIL and Damodar Valley Corporation – completed 1920 ckm of lines against the target of 1,303 ckm. State utilities did better with 3,244 ckm but still falling short of the target of 7,506 ckm. Private sector entities contributed 486 ckm, once again much lower than the planned 1,609 ckm.
