Toshiba delivers India’s first indigenous 220kV Mobile GIS system to POWERGRID

In a landmark achievement for India’s power transmission sector, country’s first indigenously manufactured 220kV Mobile Gas-Insulated Switchgear (m-GIS) System was delivered to Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) by Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems (India) Pvt Ltd (TTDI).

The launch reaffirms POWERGRID’s leadership in promoting technological innovation, standardization, and indigenization in India’s transmission network. The 220kV m-GIS System is designed and built fully in line with POWERGRID’s operational requirements, a release by TTDI said.

Safe and efficient

Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) is a compact and highly reliable system used for safe and efficient high-voltage power distribution, especially in space-constrained environments. Recognizing the need for mobility and rapid response, POWERGRID played a pivotal role in conceptualizing and defining the technical contours of a mobile GIS (m-GIS) solution.Developed and manufactured by TTDI under POWERGRID’s initiative, the m-GIS offers rapid deployment and enhances grid flexibility, resilience, and disaster-readiness

Connect-Disconnect-Redeploy

The 220kV m-GIS meets POWERGRID’s stringent design, quality, and performance criteria, enables fast grid restoration, temporary power evacuation, and substation augmentation with minimal infrastructure and time. Its modular “Connect–Disconnect–Redeploy” feature ensures operational agility, making it a game-changer for handling emergency and flexible grid needs. The m-GIS solution is designed to accommodate on standard trailer dimensions and curated to meet the necessary electrical clearances and mechanical stresses during its transportation and deployment.

Reinforcing “Make in India”

“We are proud to collaborate with POWERGRID in making this milestone possible and realize an indigenous solution to support the critical application and needs in EHV GRID network in India. Reinforcing our Make in India commitment, the delivery of the first-of-its-kind Mobile 220kV m-GIS Solution in India is a remarkable achievement for us. TTDI is at the forefront of providing special, unique and customized solutions to bring value to critical needs and unique applications of our customers. The m-GIS solution delivered to POWERGRID is fully customized and is adeptly tailored for various applications to improve resilience in network(s).The 220kV m-GIS showcases our competence and realizes the endeavor of “Make in India”. To strengthen India’s power infrastructure, we will continue to roll out more m-GIS solutions”, remarked Mr. Hiroshi Furuta, Chairman and Managing Director, TTDI.

400kV m-GIS soon

TTDI will continue its journey of a series of firsts in m-GIS solutions in India, by manufacturing India’s first indigenous 400kV Mobile Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) System for POWERGRID, expected to be delivered during August 2026. Apart from this, indigenous 132kV m-GIS Solution is also lined up for delivery to POWERGRID during November  2025.
