Vikran Engineering commissions 132kV Miao–Namsai Line in Arunachal Pradesh

Vikran Engineering Ltd has announced the successful commissioning of the strategically significant 132kV Miao–Namsai transmission line in Arunachal Pradesh.

In a release, Vikran Engineering said that project marks a key milestone in strengthening power transmission infrastructure in the North Eastern Region and supports the development of a more resilient and reliable electricity network.

The project comprises 40.630 km of transmission line and 138 tower foundations, including two highly challenging pile foundations executed under difficult geological conditions. Successfully delivering the project across one of India’s most demanding terrains underscores Vikran Engineering’s engineering excellence, technical expertise, and execution capabilities, the release said.

Recognising its strategic importance for strengthening Arunachal Pradesh’s power infrastructure, the project was closely monitored by the Ministry of Power, Government of India, throughout its execution.

 

Impact on NER

The commissioning of the transmission line is expected to significantly strengthen the power supply network in Arunachal Pradesh, improve the reliability of the existing transmission system, connect remote areas to the National Grid, and facilitate the evacuation and integration of upcoming hydropower projects across the North Eastern Region (NER). The project will play an important role in enhancing energy accessibility while supporting the region’s long-term economic growth and infrastructure development.

Part of Centrally-funded scheme

According to information available with tndindia.com but not contained in the release issued by Vikran Engineering Ltd, the 132kV single-circuit Miao-Namsai transmission line under discussion is part of a Centrally-sponsored project known as “Comprehensive Scheme of Transmission & Distribution System in Arunachal Pradesh & Sikkim.” Approved in October 2014 and expected to cost Rs.9,129 crore, this project is currently under construction with expected completion by March 2027. Central PSU Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) is the implementing agency.

The overall project envisages 114 substations (1 of 220kV, 32 of 132kV, 11 of 66kV and 70 of 33kV) spread across Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. A new transmission line network of around 3,633 km, across the various voltages cited above, is also part of the project.

Arunachal Pradesh is a sparsely populated state with a massive geographical area of 84,000 sqkm covering 20 districts. Currently, only five districts are connected to the 220kV or 132kV transmission network with the 33kV network being the backbone of the state’s power distribution grid.

The aforementioned Central scheme aims to strengthen the 132kV network for proper voltage management and minimization of losses.
