Waaree Energies has commissioned a 10-mw solar photovoltaic power plant in Puducherry, which is understood to be the first solar plant in the said city.

A release by Waaree Energies said that the grid-connected plant will supply power to Pondicherry Electricity Grid and Pondicherry Electric Department.

With an agreement under the Long Term Open Access LTOA scheme, Waaree has signed a 25-year power purchase agreement with Chemfab Alkalies.

Commenting on the launch, Viren Doshi, Director, Waaree Energies said, “We are honored to be partnering with the Pondicherry Energy Department and the Pondicherry Electricity Grid to enable the union territory build a solar efficient future. With India on the brink of a solar-powered revolution, this move will potentially contribute to the country’s vision of achieving 175 GW by 2022. Furthermore, it will propel overall development of Pondicherry and also scale new heights in making solar a mainstream source of energy in the country. We will continue to be committed to providing high quality and cost effective sustainable energy solutions to our country.”

Financed by IREDA, the project is equipped with 37,920 Waaree-make solar modules, and the project EPC works were also handled by Waaree Energies.

The plant is expected to annually generate 17,500,000 kwh of electricity. The plant will help power smaller towns and make green electricity accessible even to the remotest areas of Puducherry, the release said.
