In a landmark development, Tata Power has issued its first set of “Green Bills” to those consumers opting in for 100 per cent “Green Power”.

So far, 37 consumers, all based in Mumbai, have opted for receiving 100 per cent “Green Power” from Tata Power, their power utility. These consumers include leading IT firms, banks and consumer business groups. These 37 consumers are expected to have a combined annual electricity consumption of 19 million kwh.

It may be recalled that Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), in its order dated March 22, 2021, allowed consumers in Maharashtra an option of sourcing all their power requirement through renewable energy sources by paying “Green Tariff”, which works out to Rs.0.66 per kwh over and above the regular tariff approved in the respective tariff order.

Following the MERC permission, Tata Power initiated the process of empowering its customers with sustainable ‘Green’ growth from April 2021.

Consumers who wish to receive ‘Green Power’ are paying “Green Tariff” as approved by the MERC. These customers have been sent their first ‘Green Bill’ for consumption 100 per cent ‘Green Power’ for the past month.

Speaking on this initiative, Sanjay Banga, President T&D, Tata Power, said, “We at Tata Power have always strived to provide our customers with innovative solutions and empowered them with emerging technologies. With the continued thrust for sustainable and Green Power, we are glad to collaborate with our customers in their goal to reduce their carbon footprint and reaffirm the Tata Group’s commitment for sustainability. We look forward to more such customers to come forward and opt for Green Power and contribute towards a sustainable future.”

In a release, Tata Power said that it endeavors to provide 100 per cent Green Power to commercial & industrial (C&I) organizations as well as residential customers who are committed towards the cause of sustainability and are keen to reduce their carbon footprint.  This green initiative has received overwhelming response from its customers and Tata Power has been receiving many queries regarding the new services.

Today, Tata Power has a 31 per cent clean energy portfolio and aims to increase its clean energy share by 40-50 per cent by 2025. The power major is steadily improving itself on the sustainability front and is progressively improving its environmental, social and governance (ESG) rating (MSCI-BB). Tata Power in its commitment towards sustainability has consistently focused on providing its customer base with new green offerings like solar microgrids, EV charging and rooftop solar services, the release added.
