JSW Energy, in a release, said that it would build its power generation portfolio exclusively through renewable energy sources.

The company plans to expand its current power generation capacity of around 4.6 GW (see table) to 10 GW by FY25. This would further grow to 20 GW by FY30. This addition of around 15.4 GW would come from renewable energy sources like hydropower, solar and wind.

The company has already won solar and wind power projects under auctions by Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).  JSW Energy said that construction is in full swing with respect to renewable energy projects aggregating 2.5 GW.

Here is an update on various ongoing projects:

  • Under the SECI IX auction, JSW Energy (through its fully-owned step-down subsidiary) won 810 mw of wind/blended wind capacity. Out of this, PPA for 540 mw has been signed with SECI while that for the remaining 270 mw is expected to be tied up by the second quarter of this fiscal year.
  • In the SECI IX auction, JSW Energy has won 450 mw of wind power capacity, the PPA for which is also expected to be signed in the second quarter of FY22.
  • JSW Energy has planned to set up group captive solar/wind power projects, with an aggregate capacity of 958 mw approved by the company board. The electricity will be supplied to group company JSW Steel, among others.
  • In Himachal Pradesh, JSW Energy is developing the 240-mw Kutehr hydropower plant on River Ravi in Chamba district. The PPA is under finalization with a power discom in Haryana, JSW Energy said. Meanwhile, in August 2020, technology group ANDRITZ was awarded the electromechanical package for this project.

Share of renewables

Currently, around 30 per cent of the JSW Energy’s power generation portfolio comes from renewable energy sources, including hydropower (See table). By end of FY25, this share is expected to grow to around 70 per cent, and by FY30-end, the metric would reach around 85 per cent.
