The Grid Solutions business of GE Renewable Energy has won a major order from Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL) for the supply of 765kV transformers and reactors.

In a release, GE said that it would be supply 13 units of 765kV transformers and 32 units of 765kV reactors, under the order whose valued was not specified.

GE’s transformers and reactors will be installed in the new substations that will be set up in the Indian state of Rajasthan by PGCIL, to evacuate 8.1 GW of power from the state’s solar energy zones under Phase-II of the Transmission System for evacuation of power from solar energy zones in Rajasthan project.

This includes the evacuation of energy from four solar energy zones within Rajasthan for onward dispersal of power to various beneficiaries – 1.05 GW  from Bhadla, 2.2 GW  from Fatehgarh, 1.9 GW  from Ramgarh and 2.95 GW from Bikaner.

Commenting on the order win, Pitamber Shivnani, President & CEO, GE’s Grid Solutions, South Asia, said: “With a persistent focus on decarbonization and round-the-clock power, we believe that the Indian energy landscape will continue to undergo a significant positive transformation. The transmission system for evacuation of power from solar energy zones in Rajasthan is an excellent initiative by India’s government to promote the use of green energy. As a leader in grid modernization solutions, we are always proud to join hands with valued customer Power Grid Corporation of India to implement innovative solutions that will help India accelerate its energy transition journey.”

 Make in India

Reenforcing GE’s commitment to the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ vision, this project’s transformers and reactors will be supplied from GE Grid Solutions’ state-of-the-art power transformer manufacturing facility in Vadodara, Gujarat.

PGCIL in Rajasthan

It may be mentioned that PGCIL, over the past few months, has won five transmission projects under the tariff-based competitive mechanism (TBCB) mechanism,  related to evacuation of electricity from upcoming solar zones in Rajasthan.

The overall scheme, officially known as “Transmission system strengthening scheme for evacuation of power from solar energy zones in Rajasthan (8.1 GW) under Phase-II” has several components, denoted as Part A, Part B, etc. Each part is to be developed by a project SPV, under the TBCB mode.

PGCIL has so far won the following five of these sub-components:

  • Ramgarh New Transmission Ltd [Phase-II (Part A)]
  • Fatehgarh Bhadla Transco Ltd [Phase-II (Part B)
  • Sikar New Transmission Ltd [Phase-II (Part C)]
  • Sikar-II Aligarh Transmission Ltd [Phase-II (Part D)]
  • Bikaner-II Bhiwadi Transco Ltd [Phase-II (Part F)]
