BHEL, Patel Engg bag major orders from NHPC for Dibang project

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has reported the winning of a order valued at over Rs.2,200 crore from NHPC relating to the Dibang multipurpose project in Arunachal Pradesh.

In a stock exchange filing, BHEL said that the order aggregating Rs.2,241.86 crore (excluding taxes) entails providing electromechanical works for NHPC’s 12×240-mw Dibang multipurpose project at Roing in Arunachal Pradesh.

The scope of works covers design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection and commissioning of electromechanical package involving turbine, generator, digital governing system, static excitation system, transformers, bus reactors, gas insulated switchgear, outdoor pot yard and switchyard equipment. It also includes electrical and mechanical balance-of-plant.

 

The order, won under international competitive bidding, is scheduled for completion in 75 months.

 

BHEL added that major equipment for the contract will be manufactured by the company’s plants at Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Bangalore (Karnataka), Jhansi (Uttar Pradesh) and Rudrapur (Uttarakhand). The on-site execution activities will be carried out by the company’s Power Sector – Eastern Region division, Kolkata.

 

Patel Engineering JV too wins order

In an independent development, Patel Engineering also announced that the company, in joint venture with an unnamed partner, has won the “Civil Works Lot-4” order from NHPC for the Dibang project. The Rs.3,637-crore mandate in which Patel Engineering will have 50 per cent share, is scheduled for completion in 86 months. The order involves construction of head race tunnels including intake, pressure shafts, penstocks, power house and transformer cavern, tail race tunnels, pothead yard, adits etc.

 

Project background

The 2,880-mw Dibang multipurpose project is located on river Dibang, in Lower Dibang Valley District of Arunachal Pradesh. The project envisages construction of a 278m high concrete gravity dam (above deepest foundation level), six horseshoe-shaped head race tunnels of length varying from 300m to 600m with 9m diameter, an underground power house and six horseshoe-shaped tail race tunnels of length varying from 320m to 470 m with 9m dia.

 

The estimated total cost of project is around Rs.28,000 crore at Jun 2018 price level. The project shall generate 2,880 mw (12 x 240 mw) power to produce 11,223 million kwh of energy in a 90 per cent dependable year.

 

The Dibang project is believed to be the the largest ever hydroelectric projects to be constructed in India. The 278m-tall dam will be the highest in India once completed.

The Dibang multipurpose project is envisaged as a storage based hydro-electric project with flood moderation as the key objective. The construction of Dibang MPP shall prevent the sizeable downstream area from floods. After implementation of master plan of Brahmaputra Board for flood moderation of all rivers contributing to river Brahmaputra, of which Dibang MPP is one component, sizable area will be protected from flooding and help in mitigating the perennial damage due to floods in Assam.
