Godrej Electricals & Electronics, a division of Godrej & Boyce, has announced the commissioning of Mumbai’s first 400kV GIS substation.

This substation will add 1,500 MVA of transfer capacity to Mumbai city, addressing the escalating demand of the city, a release from Godrej & Boyce said.

According to Raghavendra Mirji, Executive Vice President & Business Head, Godrej Electricals & Electronics, “With a commitment to reliability and sustainability, our strides in the substation sector signify not just a business success but a vital contribution to India’s energy resilience. As we install Mumbai’s first 400kV GIS substation, adding 1,500 MVA capacity for the city, we are not merely building substations; we are laying the foundation for a future where energy is both abundant and green. We envision a landscape where cutting-edge technology meets the growing energy demands, fostering a brighter and more sustainable tomorrow for India.”

Godrej Electricals & Electronics said that during FY24 so far, the company has commissioned eight substations, including the 400kV Mumbai GIS substation. The company’s outstanding order book in the substation segment currently stands at over Rs.1,700 crore.

The business has completed projects ranging from 132kV to 765kV, the release said, adding that by providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy infrastructure in metro cities, challenging terrains of North East states and Jammu, apart from regional hubs like Khavda in Gujarat. Godrej Electricals & Electronics is shaping the future of high-capacity, cutting-edge substation projects while addressing the power challenges of the country.

Project details

Though the Godrej & Boyce release does not mention the project owner of the 400kV GIS substation discussed in this story, T&D India believes that the substation is part of a transmission system developed by “Kharghar Vikhroli Transmission Ltd” (KVTL) owned by Adani Energy Solutions Ltd – the power T&D arm of Adani Group.

The transmission system developed by KVTL aims at transmitting an additional 1,000 mw to Mumbai city. Apart from the 400kV GIS substation, the system includes an air-insulated switchyard at Kharghar; 400kV double/multi circuit Kharghar-Vikhroli line; 400kV loop-in loop-out (LILO) on Talegaon-Kalwa line at Vikhroli; 22kV LILO on Trombay-Salsette line at Vikhroli.
