Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) has announced the commissioning of an augmentation scheme in the southern region.

In a brief stock exchange communication, PGCIL said the project formally referred to as “Augmentation of transformation capacity in Southern Region” was commissioned on March 24, 2024. No further details were provided.

According to information available from other official sources, it is reliably learnt that the said project was implemented by PGCIL under the regulated tariff mechanism (RTM) route.

The project costing Rs.176.22 crore was originally targeted to commissioning in March 2023.

It is further learnt that the project under discussion was approved at the 6th meeting of the National Committee on Transmission (NCT) held in December 2021.  The scheme was then estimated to cost Rs.125 crore, with an envisaged completion timeframe of 15 months.

The broad objective of the scheme was to augment capacities at certain substations of PGCIL in the Southern Region due to “N-1” non-compliance of existing interconnecting transformers (ICTs) under peak load conditions.

The project scope, according to official information available, included addition of a third ICT of 500 MVA each at the 2×315 MVA Palakkad (Kerala), 2×500 MVA Kolar (Karnataka) and 2×1,500 MVA Nizamabad (Telangana) substations of PGCIL.
