GE Power India Ltd (GEPIL) has received a letter of intent from NTPC GE Power Services Pvt Ltd (NGSL) for renovation & modernization of steam turbines in Gujarat.

The order, valued at Rs.243.46 crore (exclusive of GST) relates to renovation & modernization of LMZ steam turbines associated with Unit 1 (210 MW) and Unit 2 (210 MW) of the Wanakbori thermal power station, for heat rate (efficiency) improvement and life extension.

Interestingly, NGSL – a joint venture between GE Power India Ltd and NTPC – participated in this bid as lead bidder while GEPIL participated as a consortium partner.

GEPIL will be responsible for all the critical supplies including design & engineering, testing and commissioning of the system, the company said in a stock exchange filing. The order is scheduled to complete in 33 months.

As GEPIL and NGSL are related entities, they will work on the contract at “arms’ length,” the communication said.

Owned by Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd (GSECL), the Wanakbori coal-fired power plant has a total installed capacity of 2270 MW, coming from 7 subcritical units of 210 MW each and one supercritical unit of 800 MW. Located in Kheda district of Gujarat, the Wanakbori plant is currently the biggest power plant of GESCL, and accounts for over 30 per cent of the utility’s total installed power generation capacity.

NTPC GE Power Services Pvt Ltd (NGSL) was incorporated in September 1999 as a 50:50 joint venture between NTPC Ltd and the GE Group. The JV, known as NTPC Alstom Power Services Pvt Ltd, at the time of incorporation, is involved in providing rehabilitation, R&M and O&M services to thermal power plants, primarily in India.
