The Government of Uganda dedicated a power transmission project for which Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) was the project management consultant (PMC).

President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Vice President of Uganda, Ms Jessica Alupo dedicated Nebbi and Arua substations built with PGCIL as the PMC.

The dedication ceremony took place in the presence of Uganda’s Cabinet Minister of Energy, Ruth Ssentamu Nankabirwa, MPs and top officials from Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd (UETCL). Dr. Yatindra Dwivedi, Director (Personnel), PGCIL and Sanjay Kumar Gupta, Head of International Business, PGCIL, represented the Central PSU at the ceremony and congratulated the Government of Uganda.

The company provided PMC services for the establishment of 132kV Kole-Gulu-Olwiyo-Nebbi-Arua double-circuit transmission line of 289 km involving river crossing of White Nile having 120m tall towers on each bank along with associated four substations at Kole, Gulu, Nebbi and Arua.

The project was part of Uganda’s Grid Expansion & Reinforcement Project (GERP), funded by the World Bank.

The transmission system integrates the West Nile region with the Ugandan National Grid and will contribute towards the overall growth of that country, a release said.

Uganda’s GERP

According to information released by World Bank, the development objective of “Grid Expansion & Reinforcement Project for Uganda” is to increase availability and efficiency of bulk electricity supply in the project areas.

This project has three components.

Construction of transmission infrastructure: This is to provide increased electricity transmission capacity to meet the power supply needs of Northern Uganda and the West Nile region and to interconnect the isolated West Nile distribution network to the main transmission grid.

Project implementation and operational support to UETCL: This aims to support the UETCL to enhance its project implementation capacity, contract administration, and operational effectiveness through technical assistance and modernization of management systems.

Sectoral Strengthening Support: This has a critical role to fulfill in policy formulation and strategy, planning, and coordination of the growing and increasingly complex electricity sector. It has three subcomponents — coordination and supervision of safeguards; sector skill assessment; and sector skill strengthening program.
