Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has formally announced the winning of the EPC contract related to Damodar Valley Corporation’s (DVC) Koderma thermal power project.

BHEL will set up the 2×800-mw coal-fired supercritical power plant in Koderma district of Jharkhand on EPC basis.

BHEL’s scope of work for this project includes supply, erection and commissioning, along with civil works. Key equipment for the project will be supplied by BHEL’s manufacturing units at Haridwar, Trichy, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Bhopal and Ranipet, while the execution on site will be undertaken by the company’s Power Sector – Eastern Region. The scope also includes highly efficient equipment for emission control, a release by BHEL said.

Significantly, this is the first 800-MW project of DVC and will be set up adjacent to the existing 2×500-MW units, which were also installed by BHEL on EPC basis.

BHEL has a long-standing partnership with DVC and has installed more than 80 per cent of the coal-based power stations of the utility in Jharkhand and West Bengal, the release added.

Though the BHEL release has not specified the value of the contract, it is estimated to be in the region of Rs.13,300 crore.

In the news since late June 2024

It may be recalled that late evening on June 27, 2024, a government release, on behalf of the Union power ministry,  said that DVC, on June 26, 2024, had finalised the tender for the EPC package of Koderma TPS (2×800-MW), in Jharkhand, with BHEL, at a price of Rs.13,300 crore.

When the media carried this news prominently, BHEL, in a stock exchange filing dated June 28, 2024 (10:42 am), said that it has submitted an offer for the 2×800-MW DVC Koderma tender in June 2024, which is an activity in the normal course of business. However, the order was yet to be confirmed by DVC, the filing clarified. BHEL has now officially declared winning of the contract.
