Torrent Power and Adani Power have won letters of awards from Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Ltd (MPPMCL) for supply of power from greenfield thermal power plants to be set up in Madhya Pradesh.

In independent announcements, Torrent Power and Adani Power said that they won the mandates under tariff-based competitive bidding, and would be setting up greenfield coal-fired power plants in Madhya Pradesh, under the design, build, finance & operate (DBFOOT) model.

In both the cases, the power plants will be based on efficient ultra-supercritical (USC) technology. Both Torrent Power and Adani Power will enter into power purchase agreements with state discoms of Madhya Pradesh, in due course.

Here are broad details of the proposed power plants

Developer: Torrent Power Ltd
Capacity: 2×800-MW
Tariff: Rs.5.829 per kWh
Investment: Rs.22,000 crore
Gestation period: 72 months from date of PPA
Location: Madhya Pradesh (district undisclosed)
Employment during construction phase: 8,000 to 10,000 persons (direct & indirect)

Developer: Adani Power Ltd
Capacity: 1×800-MW
Tariff: Rs.5.838 per kWh
Investment: Rs.10,500 crore
Gestation period: 54 months from date of PPA
Location: Anuppur district, Madhya Pradesh
Employment during construction phase: 6,000 to 7,000 persons (direct & indirect)

For Torrent Power, the envisaged Rs.22,000 crore capital expenditure would be the Torrent Group’s single-largest investment in the power sector.

For Adani Power, the Madhya Pradesh mandate marks the fourth power supply order in the past 12 months. In September 2024, Adani Power, along with Adani Green Energy, received the LoI for a composite 6,600 MW (5,000 MW solar + 1,600 MW thermal) power supply order from Maharashtra. In May 2025, it received the LoA from Uttar Pradesh government for supply of 1,600 MW power from a greenfield plant in the state. In August 2025, the company received the LoA from Bihar government for supply of 2,400 MW of power from a new power plant to be set up in Bihar.

India’s largest thermal power producer in the private sector, Adani Power currently has installed thermal power capacity of 18,110 MW spread over 12 plants located in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu.

Torrent Power’s current installed thermal power capacity stands at 3,092 MW that includes 2,730 MW from two gas-fired plants and 362 MW from a coal-based plant, all located in Gujarat.
