Bajel Projects Ltd has announced the successful commissioning and handover of the critical 400kV multi-circuit Maharanibagh—Narela transmission line project to Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL), setting multiple national benchmarks for complex power infrastructure development.
The line was completed and handed over on November 25, 2025, Bajel Projects announced in a recent official release.
Located in the densely populated Delhi – National Capital Region (NCR), the project faced significant logistical and engineering challenges. Bajel Projects’ solution involved deploying a multi-circuit configuration utilizing a combination of 83 lattice towers and 40 monopoles, coupled with advanced twin high-temperature low-sag (HTLS) conductors.
Firstly, this project features India’s first vertically configured 400kV multi-circuit line on monopoles. This pioneering design maximizes transmission capacity while minimizing the right-of-way (RoW) requirement, which is crucial for urban environments.
The project is also PGCIL’s first project featuring 400kV insulated cross-arm on monopoles. This technology was introduced in the project for enhanced reliability and safety, Bajel Projects said.
The monopole structure commissioned in this project was also India’s first insulated cross-arm on monopoles. The monopole used was also India’s tallest monopole (reaching a tower height of 88.23m measured from foundation top) as well as India’s heaviest monopole weighing 290 tonnes.
Besides, with a diameter (including baseplate) of 3,900mm, it was also the largest-diameter monopole deployed by Bajel Projects.
The project faced the complexities of working within an active metropolitan area. Despite these challenges, Bajel Projects focused on seamless project management and advanced engineering techniques to ensure high-quality delivery, the release said.
“Delivering India’s first 400kV multi-circuit monopole line in a dense urban environment is a reflection of Bajel Projects’ engineering innovation and our commitment to nation-building. We are proud to have delivered this critical infrastructure ensuring enhanced power security for the region,” noted Piyush Bansal, Joint President & Head of Transmission, Bajel Projects.
