IndiGrid fully commissions Gujarat BESS project

  • T&D India

In early May 2026, IndiGrid fully commissioned GBPL – its landmark 180 MW / 360 MWh battery energy storage project in Gujarat.

As one of India’s largest standalone utility-scale BESS projects at a single location, GBPL (Gujarat BESS Pvt Ltd) marks a significant milestone in the country’s evolving energy landscape. Built as a state-of-the-art engineering solution, the project exemplifies the scale, sophistication, and innovation required to support India’s clean energy transition, while reinforcing IndiGrid’s growing role in building the grid infrastructure of the future, a release by IndiGrid (IndiGrid Infrastructure Trust) said.

During the quarter, IndiGrid consummated the acquisition of Gadag Transmission Ltd (GTL) an ISTS project, with around 187 ckm of lines and 1,500 MVA transformation capacity, located in Karnataka, from ReNew Power, for an enterprise value of around Rs.372 crore.

Defining period

Commenting on the quarter, Harsh Shah, Managing Director of IndiGrid, said, “The last 12-15 months have been defining for IndiGrid. We continued our strong operational performance and expansion of our portfolio pipeline. Earlier this month, we successfully commissioned GBPL – our landmark 180 MW / 360 MWh Battery Energy Storage System project in Gujarat – reinforcing IndiGrid’s position at the forefront of India’s evolving energy transition landscape.

As India’s energy transition gathers pace, IndiGrid continues to focus on operational excellence, innovation, and building next-generation infrastructure platforms that support the country’s growing and increasingly dynamic power needs.”

Portfolio update

As of March 31, 2026, IndiGrid had an operational power transmission portfolio of 18 projects covering 8,929 ckm of lines and 22,050 MVA of transformation capacity.

It may be mentioned that IndiGrid’s under-construction projects have been transferred to a new platform EnerGrid – promoted by IndiGrid, British International Investment (BII) and Norwegian Climate Investment Fund (Norfund). Besides, all power transmission and BESS projects will now be bid for by Norfund. IndiGrid will be acquiring these assets after one year of their commissioning.

Accordingly, EnerGrid’s power transmission portfolio as of March 31, 2026, covered five projects encompassing 689 ckm of lines and 10,500 MVA of substation capacity. These will be acquired by IndiGrid, after a year of their respective commissioning dates, at a total enterprise value currently estimated at Rs.4,660 crore.

The five power transmission projects in question are all interstate transmission system (ISTS) schemes acquired under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) route. The underlying projects SPVs are: Ishanagar Power Transmission Ltd, Dhule Power Transmission Ltd, Kallam Transco Ltd, Ratle Kiru Power Transmission Ltd and Morena I SEZ Transmission Ltd. While Morena I was bid by EnerGrid directly, the remaining four were originally acquired by IndiGrid and later transferred to EnerGrid.
