Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) recently inaugurated a 10-mw grid-connected solar plant at the hands of its CMD, Shashi Shanker. The solar power plant was constructed by Vikram Solar on EPC basis.

The project will power ONGC’s Dahej, Gandhar and Hazira assets in Gujarat, and will also help meet ONGC’s renewable purchase obligations.

The plant is segregated into eight blocks of 1.25 mw each for better management and efficiency. The use of polycrystalline technology will ensure that the system is self-sufficient in generating power. The project is spread across 56 acres of land and the 10-mw plant has 44,144 modules powering the whole unit.

Vikram Solar will also provide O&M service to the plant for a period of three years from the date of commissioning.

It may be mentioned that Vikram Solar currently has an EPC portfolio of 750 mw worth of solar power projects, which includes those commissioned and under construction. The company recently concluded a 130-mw solar installation for NTPC at Bhadla in Rajasthan, an 80-mw project for GIPCL at Charanka in Gujarat and a 40-mw unit for IL&FS at Kachaliya in Madhya Pradesh.

Floating solar plant

Vikram Solar, as an official company release noted, is the first solar company in India to install a floating solar project. The project came up at New Town in Kolkata, West Bengal. Vikram Solar has also supported the Calicut, Kolkata and Kochi airports to successfully switch from conventional energy to green energy.
