State transco Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Ltd (MPPTCL or MP Transco) has commissioned a new power transformer at the 132kV Gopalpur substation in Sehore district.
In a release, MPPTCL said that the new 50-MVA transformer is the second at the Gopalpur substation and has taken the substation capacity to 90 MVA.
Earlier, only one power transformer was operational at the substation. Considering the growing power demand in the region and the need for a more reliable transmission network, an additional transformer has been installed, the release noted.
The new transformer has taken MPPTCL’s overall transformation capacity, spread across 417 substations state-wide, to 85,398 MVA.
According to Rajesh Shandilya, Additional Chief Engineer of MP Transco, the availability of the second power transformer will enable more effective load management. Even if one transformer is taken out of service for maintenance or due to a technical issue, the power transmission system will continue to operate without disruption. This will provide consumers in Sehore district with a more reliable electricity transmission network.
Over 1,000 transformers in service
Currently, MPPTCL has 1,055 power transformers in service, spread across its 417 substations – 14 of 400kV, 88 of 220kV and 315 of 132kV. (see table)
There are 41 transformers associated with 400kV substations with another 220 operated at 220kV substations. The maximum number of transformers – at 794 – relate to 132kV substations.
