Transmission lines addition spiked in September 2026, crossing 1,800 ckm, making it the highest in any month in FY27 so far. With this, the achievement in H1FY27 was more than twice of that in H1FY26.
According to newly-released statistics by Central Electricity Authority (CEA), India added 1,807 ckm of transmission lines of 220kV or above in September 2026, making it the highest addition seen in any month in FY27 so far.
Thanks to this boost, cumulative addition in the first half (H1: April to September) rose to 6,108 ckm, more than twice the 2,411 ckm achieved in H1FY26.
Interestingly, the private sector made a significant contribution of 877 ckm to the September 2026 achievement, surpassing the 625 ckm added by Central government agencies (entirely by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd [PGCIL]) and 305 ckm by state government utilities.
Resonia Ltd commissioned the 635-ckm 765kV double-circuit line associated with an ISTS-TBCB project housed under “Beawar Transmission Ltd,” a wholly-owned subsidiary of Resonia Ltd. It may be noted that the second circuit of the same line, falling under “Fatehgarh III Beawar Transmission Ltd,” another TBCB project of Resonia was commissioned in March 2026.
PGCIL, in September 2026, commissioned two lines. Both were 765kV double-circuit lines associated with PGCIL’s ISTS-TBCB schemes. The lines in question are: Bidar PS—Maheshwaram (480 ckm, Karnataka-Telangana) and Sikar-II – Khetri (145 ckm, Rajasthan).
State government utilities added 2,212 ckm of lines in H1FY27 – 32 per cent higher than the achievement in H1FY26 but meeting only 61 per cent of the targeted 3,642 ckm.
The interstate transmission system (ISTS) network received a major boost in H1FY27 with a 63 per cent share (or 3,826 ckm) of the total line addition. Almost the entire transmission line addition on the ISTS side was from TBCB projects.
For the full year FY27 (April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027), the transmission line addition target stands at 16,554 ckm, which is 36 per cent higher than the 12,139 ckm actually added in FY26. Incidentally, PGCIL appears to be on track with respect to its target achievement. The Central PSU’s FY27 full-year target stands at 5299 ckm, against which it has already achieved 4715 ckm (or 89 per cent of the target) in H1FY27 itself.
Private sector entities are expected to add 4,437 ckm in FY27 and have achieved 1,198 ckm (or about 27 per cent) till the first half of the year. Adani Energy Solutions Ltd (AESL) and Resonia Ltd are expected to lead private sector transmission line additions in FY27.
The latest CEA report of September 2026 has accounted for an 80-km HVDC line of Adani Group. This line, part of an intrastate-RTM project in Maharashtra, was commissioned in March 2026. CEA appears to have accounted for this project in September 2026, ostensibly due to “delayed reporting.” (More details on Adani Group’s HVDC scheme can be found in this tndindia.com story dated April 15, 2026)
