Kerala Chief Minister P. Vijayan is scheduled to inaugurate the new power transformer manufacturing plant of Kerala Electrical & Allied Engineering Co Ltd (KEL) on February 9, 2021, through video conferencing.

The new manufacturing plant, located at Mamala in Ernakulam district, was set up with an investment of Rs.12.5 crore, sanctioned by the Kerala government. The unit will be equipped to manufacture power transformers up to 25 MVA, 132kV class. The annual production capacity of the plant is 1,500 MVA.

KEL expects a sales turnover of Rs.47 crore and a net profit of Rs.2.53 crore per year, from the new Mamala plant, a release by KEL said.

According to information available with T&D India, KEL, in late December 2020, initiated the process of selecting a Technical Advisor to oversee operations at the new Mamala unit.

Testing lab

KEL is also planning to set up an NABL-accredited testing laboratory for testing and certification of transformers, other power equipments and electronic items as part of the power transformer plant. The project proposal for the same has been submitted to the state government for its approval. Once operational, KEL expects to serve manufacturers of transformers and other power equipment in Kerala, obviating their need to depend on labs located in other states.

EV charging station

A release by KEL said that a new electric vehicle charging station, set up in front of the new plant, will also be inaugurated on the occasion of the transformer plant inauguration. Located on Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway (NH-85, old NH-49), the EV charging station was set up as part of KEL’s plans to start manufacturing charging units for electric vehicles. The EV charging station will prove helpful for vehicles going to places such as Muvattupuzha, Kothamangalam, Idukki and Munnar, from Ernakulam, the release observed.
