Adani Transmission Ltd (ATL) added 371 ckm of new transmission lines to its operational portfolio during the third quarter (Q3: October to December) of FY23.

In an investor presentation filed on stock exchanges, ATL said that with the addition of these new lines, the total operational transmission line portfolio stands enhanced to 18,795 ckm, as of December 31, 2022.

Similarly, with 3,500 MVA of new substation (transformation) capacity added during Q3 of FY23, the total substation capacity stood at 40,001 MVA, as of given date.

During the quarter under review, ATL fully commissioned two interstate power transmission concessions, housed under project SPVs “WRSS XXI (A) Transco Ltd” and “Jam Khambaliya Transco Ltd,” respectively. Both these scheme entailed augmentation of interstate transmission system (ISTS) infrastructure to support renewable energy evacuation from western India – mainly Gujarat.

Under-construction portfolio

As of December 31, 2022, according to the investor presentation, Adani Transmission Ltd had seven transmission projects under various stages of construction. Together, these aimed to add around 3,500 ckm of transmission lines and a little over 15,200 MVA of transformation capacity. With an aggregate outlay of over Rs.15,500 crore, these projects were mainly TBCB concessions – both interstate (two) and intrastate (four).

The lone non-TBCB project is the Kudus-Mumbai HVDC link that is being implemented by a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Electricity Mumbai Ltd (AEML), in turn a subsidiary of ATL. The 80-km link with an underground component of 50 km, aims to enhance power supply to Mumbai by 1,000 mw. This project, which falls under the regulated tariff mechanism, was awarded the transmission licence by Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) in mid-2022.

The two intrastate concessions being developed by ATL are located in Madhya Pradesh (project SPV: MP Power Transmission Package-II Ltd) and Maharashtra (project SPV: Kharghar Vikhroli Transmission Pvt Ltd).

Power Distribution

In the Mumbai power distribution business, which is housed under Adani Electricity Mumbai Ltd (AEML), a subsidiary of ATL, distribution losses dropped significantly to 5.60 per cent during Q3 of FY23 from 6.53 per cent in Q3 of FY22. By the same comparison, the consumer base expanded to 3.10 million from 3.06 million. During Q3 of FY23, AEML maintained transmission availability at over 99.5 per cent and supply reliability at over 99 per cent.

AEML also showed improvement in other reliability indices, as outlined below. Figures presented are those for Q3FY23 and Q3FY22, in that order.

  • System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI): 4.22 minutes, 6.59 minutes
  • System Average Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI): 0.19 numbers, 0.15 numbers
  • Customer Average Interruption Duration Index (CAIDI): 34.56 minutes, 27.23 minutes
