Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has received a major thermal power-related order from the Adani Group.

In a stock exchange filing, BHEL said that on June 5, 2024, it signed contract agreements with Mirzapur Thermal Energy (UP) Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Adani Power Ltd, for building a coal-fired power plant in Uttar Pradesh.

The order, valued at over Rs.3,500 crore (exclusive of GST) covers supply of main plant equipment (boiler, turbine and generator) and supervision of erection & commissioning of a 2×800-mw coal-fired power plant based on supercritical technology at Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh.

The boiler and turbine-generator will be manufactured at BHEL’s Trichy and Hardwar plants, respectively.

The supply of the first unit is scheduled within 35 months and the second unit, in 41 months.

In an independent development, Adani Power Ltd, also on June 5, 2024, announced that Mirzapur Thermal Energy (UP) Pvt Ltd (MTEUPL) became a wholly-owned subsidiary Adani Power Ltd (APL) consequent upon APL’s acquisition of 99.8 per cent equity in MTEUPL. Before this, MTEUPL was a subsidiary of Adani Infra (India) Ltd, an Adani Group company.

According to information available with T&D India, the aforementioned Mirzapur thermal power project was originally to be set up by the Welspun Group through its subsidiary Welspun Energy UP Pvt Ltd (WEUPPL) as a 2×660-mw coal-fired power project based on supercritical technology.  WEUPPL was subsequently fully acquired by Adani Infra (India) Ltd and now by Adani Power Ltd.
