CEA releases report on vehicle-to-grid (V2G) infrastructure

Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has newly released a report “Electric Vehicles Utilization for Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Services” that looks at various services that electric vehicles (EVs) can provide to the power system through smart bi-directional charging.

The report prepared by a committee under the chairmanship of Member (Grid Operation & Distribution), CEA, looks into bi-directional V2G technologies and their role in integrating higher energy, while providing service to the grid.

The report focuses on planning and operation of the distribution grid with integration of EV charging infrastructure, touching upon:

  • Smart charging
  • Grid-support services from EVs to facilitate large-scale renewable energy integration
  • Technologies and standards for EV charging infrastructure’s integration with the distribution grid
  • Policies and regulations for EV charging infrastructure and integration with distribution grid
  • Identification of key challenges and recommendations for efficient, effective and sustainable integration of EV charging infrastructure in India

The cost reduction in renewable power generation makes electricity an attractive low-cost fuel for the transport sector, the report notes. A significant scaling up of EV deployment represents an opportunity for the power sector as well. The report observes that since cars (including EVs) spend about 80-90 per cent of their lifetime parked, these idle periods, combined with battery storage capacity, could make EVs an attractive flexibility solution for the power system.

EV fleets can therefore create vast electricity storage capacity, and they can act as flexible loads and as decentralized energy storage resources, which can ultimately provide additional flexibility to support power system operations, the report says.

The report, available on CEA’s official website, can be downloaded using this external link.
