CESC Ltd has recorded lower T&D losses across all its licensed and franchised distribution areas.
Based on data analyzed from an investor presentation filed on stock exchanges, CESC enjoyed lower T&D losses across its licensed areas of Kolkata and Noida, as well as its franchised operations in Rajasthan and Maharashtra. (See table).
Total electricity purchase during H1FY26 across all the serviced areas, at 11,791 MU (million units or million kwh), was 9.2 per cent higher than the comparable 10,801 MU in H1FY25.
In the Kolkata licensed area, where CESC has a consumer base of around 3.7 million spread across an area of 567 sqkm, T&D losses fell to 7 per cent in H1FY26 from 7.3 per cent in H1FY25. This reduction in losses was also coupled with a marginal decline of 2 per cent in electricity sales.

In each of three franchised areas of Rajasthan – Kota, Bharatpur and Bikaner – T&D losses were much lower in H1FY26. Consolidated T&D losses in Rajasthan, weighted by electricity sales, stood at 12.5 per cent in H1FY26, an improvement over 13.6 per cent in H1FY25.
In the franchised area of Malegaon in Maharashtra, T&D losses reduced from 41.36 per cent in H1FY25 to 38.91 per cent in H1FY26.
It may be mentioned that CESC Ltd took over as distribution licensee in the UT of Chandigarh, during February/March 2025. In H1FY26, this area recorded electricity sales of 944 MU and T&D losses of 10.99 per cent. Operations in this area are housed under Chandigarh Power Distribution Ltd (CPDL).
Incidentally, during Q2FY26, CPDL submitted a petition to the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) for approval of a five-year multi-year tariff (MYT) control period FY26 to FY30.
CESC’s distribution business, as licensee and franchisee, spans seven locations covering an area of 1,454 sqkm with a customer base of around 4.8 million. Aggregate electricity sales in FY25 stood at around 19,000 MU.
