Fifth phase of Rajasthan REZ evacuation system planned

A new transmission scheme is being planned to facilitate evacuation from upcoming renewable energy zones (REZ) in the Sirohi and Nagaur complexes in Rajasthan.

This will be the fifth phase in the series of evacuation schemes from Rajasthan REZs and will supplement several projects already under development in the preceding four phases. The earlier schemes facilitated transmission from regions like Bhadla, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Fatehgarh and Beawar, among others.

The new scheme that will be deliberated at the next meeting of the National Committee on Transmission (NCT) is termed as ““Transmission system for evacuation of power from Rajasthan REZ Ph-V (Part-1: 4 GW) [Sirohi/Nagaur] Complex” and will have a scheduled completion time of 24 months.

The new scheme, with an interregional dimension, will have the following three broad components and will be spread over the Northern Region (Rajasthan) and the Western Region (Madhya Pradesh):

  1. Transmission system for immediate evacuation of power from Sirohi substation (2 GW)
  2. Transmission system for immediate evacuation of power from Merta-II substation (2 GW)
  3. Transmission system for common evacuation of power from Sirohi Pooling Station (2 GW) and Merta-II Pooling Station (2 GW)

The first two components will involve augmentation of transformation capacity at the Sirohi and Merta-II substations, which are coming up under separate ISTS schemes. The augmentation will involve putting up a total of eight 400/220kV, 500 MVA interconnecting transformers (ICT) spread over the two substations.

The third component, with an interregional dimension, will involve the building of a NR-WR interregional corridor through a 765kV double-circuit line running 320 km, from Sirohi in Rajasthan to the Mandsaur Pooling Station in Madhya Pradesh. There will also be a 260-km 765kV double-circuit line from Mandsaur PS to a new substation at Khadwa, both in Madhya Pradesh. [All distances in running km and not circuit km]

The scheme is estimated to cost Rs.5,224.61 crore with the NR portion expected to cost Rs.3,094.40 crore and the WR portion, Rs.2,130.21 crore.

This project has already been approved by the North Region Power Committee (NRPC) while feedback from the Western Region Power Committee (WRPC) is not yet officially available.
