Foundation stone for Rajasthan nuclear power project to be laid on September 25

The foundation stone laying ceremony of a greenfield 2,800-MW nuclear power project in Rajasthan is scheduled for September 25, 2025.
Comprising four units of 700-MW each, the Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (MBRAPP), is being developed by Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Ltd (ASHVINI) – a joint venture between Central PSUs – Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) and NTPC Ltd. The project will take shape in Rajasthan’s Banswara district.
With an investment of around Rs.42,000 crore, MBRAPP is an important step towards India accelerating its clean energy transition with an ambitious target of scaling nuclear power capacity to 100 GW by 2047. The first unit of MBRAPP is expected to be commissioned by 2031.
The project marks a significant milestone in strengthening the nation’s energy security and advancing its sustainability goals, a government release said.
Designed with indigenously developed 700 MW Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), the facility represents India’s technological self-reliance in the nuclear sector. The state-of-the-art project is expected to significantly strengthen the nation’s energy security, generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities, and spur socio-economic growth by enhancing local infrastructure in the Banswara district.
India currently has 8.8 GW installed nuclear power generation capacity, and plans to raise 100 GW by 2047. This milestone underscores India’s growing commitment to clean, reliable, and sustainable energy, reaffirming nuclear power’s role as a vital pillar of the country’s energy future. To boost the sector, the government allocated about Rs.20,000 crore in the recent Union Budget. Nuclear power is favored for its low emissions and its ability to provide reliable baseload electricity, the release added.
