GE T&D India is viewing opportunities in the HVDC power transmission space, and is expected active tendering on 4-5 projects in FY23, according to senior company officials.
Addressing an investor conference, a senior official of GE T&D India said that there are around four prospective HVDC projects that have yet to enter the tendering stage, apart from one HVDC project by Adani Group that is believed to be tendered soon.
The other HVDC projects that present available opportunities to GE T&D India include the Leh-Ladakh transmission system (likely to be constructed by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd, under the regulated tariff mechanism), one HVDC link between Bhadla (Rajasthan) to Uttar Pradesh, and one system connecting Khavda (Gujarat) to Indore (Madhya Pradesh). These HVDC projects are currently in the prospective stage with tendering expected in the early part of FY23.
Order book
Government entities dominated GE T&D India’s order book position, as of September 30, 2021, according to the company’s investor presentation. Such entities accounted for 63 per cent (or Rs.2,593 crore) of the outstanding order book position of Rs.4,150 crore, as of given date. State utilities had a share of 19 per cent while private entities accounted for 18 per cent.
In Q2 of FY22, GE T&D India reported new order inflows of Rs.634 crore, more or less equaled balanced between domestic and export mandates.
Major mandates clinched in Q2 of FY22 included multiple contracts by Bhutan Power Corporation to build four gas insulated switchgear (GIS) substations in the hilly nation, on turnkey basis.
GE T&D India also won orders for 765kV transformers from PGCIL for deployment in transmission schemes associated with evacuation from upcoming solar energy parks in Rajasthan.
Order inflows in Q2 of FY22 were nearly 18 per cent higher than the Rs.539 crore of orders in the same period of FY21. In H1 (April to September) of FY22, total order inflows clocked Rs.1,106 crore, up 12.6 per from Rs.982.1 crore in H1 of FY21.

Key commissionings
An important project commissioned by GE T&D India during Q2 of FY22 included that for state utility Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (UPPTCL). Here, GE T&D India delivered the entire substation, at Hardoi Road (see picture above), which included gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) of various types — eight 400kV, four 220kV and five 132kV. The project also included two 500 MVA reactors and one 63 MVA bus reactor. This project was critical to Uttar Pradesh’s grid modernization plan.
GE T&D India, during the said quarter, also commissioned two large substations – one for Saur Urja and the other for Adani Transmission – both in Rajasthan. Apart from this, key transmission equipment was also commissioned for Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) and Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).
