India is likely to soon invite global bids for setting up battery storage projects aggregating 4,000 mw, according to a reliable media report.

This was indicated by Union power minister R.K. Singh while addressing a video conference with the US India Strategic Partnership Forum.

The battery-based storage capacity will be developed at several locations including Ladakh. According to plans, the battery-based storage will be charged using renewable energy sources, mainly solar.

Meanwhile, India has set a target of achieving 175 GW of RE capacity by 2022, and 450 GW by 2030.

Currently, India’s renewable energy capacity – largely from solar and wind – stands at over 100 GW. Adding hydropower, which is also regarded as a clean energy source, the total works out to 146 GW.

The minister also informed the conference that India would be inviting bids for green hydrogen in the next 3-4 months to pave the way for viable usage of hydrogen as fuel, the report said.
