Larsen & Toubro has announced the winning of a significant order from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), in Tamil Nadu.
In a release, L&T said that its Heavy Civil Infrastructure (HCI) business vertical has won a “significant” order from NPCIL relating to the upcoming 2×1,000 MWe Kundankulam Nuclear Power Project – Units 5 & 6 (KKNPP-5&6) in Tamil Nadu.
The scope of the order encompasses the mechanical package for the project, including installation of the nuclear reactor and turbine systems (with generator and condenser), sea water systems, polar and trestle cranes, and other related equipment. It also includes accessories, piping, supports, structural steelwork, painting, anti-corrosion coating, insulation and full testing across various buildings and structures on site.
“The order reinforces L&T’s track record and proven expertise in delivering complex and large-scale nuclear power infrastructure projects for India’s clean energy mission,” the L&T release said.
Though L&T did not disclose the exact value of the order, it is estimated to be in the region of Rs.1,000 crore to Rs.2,500 crore, based on L&T’s classification of a “significant” order win.
KKNPP
Based on information released by NPCIL, the KKNPP-5&6 project is located in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. It is an extension of the already-operating KKNPP-1&2 (2×1,000 MWe) and the under-construction KKNPP-3&4 (also 2×1,000 MWe).
KKNPP-5&6 entails commissioning of two atomic power generation units of 1,000 MWe each, based on light water reactors. The project is being implemented in technical collaboration with Russian Federation.
Once KNPP-3,4,5&6 is commissioned, the total capacity of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Station (KKNPS) will rise to 6,000 MWe from the current 2,000 MWe.
As of July 31, 2025, India’s nuclear power generation capacity stood at 8,780 MWe, entirely owned by NPCIL.
