Larsen & Toubro, through its Power Transmission & Distribution (PTD) business, has received orders to supply gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substations to upcoming renewable energy parks in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.

According to an official release, the PTD business has landed orders to set up 765kV and 400kV GIS substations that would serve as pooling substations. These orders will be executed at the Khavda renewable energy zone in Kutch district of Gujarat and in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. In the case of the Kurnool project, the order also includes air insulated switchgear (AIS) bays at the pooling and remote-end substations.

The combined scope of these substation packages includes more than 7km of gas insulated bus ducts, bus reactors and protection & automation systems.

Further, the PT&D Business has also bagged orders to develop distribution infrastructure in two circles of Rajasthan’s prominent discom.

What are pooling substations?

As the country’s power generation evolves, large renewable energy (RE) zones are being developed that house several solar and wind projects from various developers in contiguous land parcels. The power generated from such individual projects is collected at pooling substations, located in the vicinity, and then redistributed to intrastate and interstate transmission networks, the L&T release explained.

Note: The L&T release has not specified the names of the entities placing the aforementioned orders or their total value. However, based on the nomenclature adopted by L&T, the orders fall in the “significant” category implying that the total order value is in the range Rs.1,000 crore to Rs.2,500 crore.
