Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL) has furthered its presence in the power transmission development space by winning two intrastate schemes.

Both the intrastate schemes are located in Uttar Pradesh and have been won by MEIL under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) route.

In a stock exchange filing, PFC Consulting Ltd (PFCCL), acting as the bid process coordinator for both the schemes, said that the project SPVs for the two schemes were transferred to MEIL – the successful bidder — on March 7, 2024.

The broad details of the two schemes are:

Project SPV: Tirwa Transmission Ltd
Scheme: “Construction of 220/132/33kV Tirwa (Kannauj) substation with associated lines and LILO of one circuit of 400kV D/C (Twin Moose) Shamli-Aligarh line at THDC 2×660 mw Khurja Power Plant.”

Project SPV: Jewar Transmission Ltd
Scheme: “Construction of 400/220 kV, 2×500 MVA GIS Substation Jewar, 220/33kV; 2×60 MVA GIS substation Cantt (Chaukaghat) Varanasi; 220/33kV, 3×60 MVA GIS substation Vasundhara (Ghaziabad); 220/132/33kV, 2×160+2×40 MVA Substation Khaga (Fatehpur) with associated lines.”

Bidders in fray

As already reported by T&D India, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) and Tata Power were in the race with MEIL for the Jewar project, while MEIL was contending with PGCIL for the Tirwa transmission scheme.

MEIL’s transmission portfolio

According to information available with T&D India, MEIL will now have a portfolio of three intrastate transmission system (InSTS) projects, won under the TBCB route. In January 2023, MEIL won an InSTS-TBCB scheme in Madhya Pradesh housed under project SPV “MP Power Transmission Package-I Ltd”.

In the interstate transmission system (ISTS) space, Megha Engineering has one scheme under “Khandukhal Rampura Transmission Ltd” that was acquired in October 2022. Subsequently, in April 2023, MEIL was named successful bidder for an ISTS-TBCB scheme housed under “KPS1 Transmission Ltd.” However, this project was acquired by Adani Energy Solutions Ltd in August 2023.

InSTS-TBCB in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh has made significant progress in deploying the TBCB culture in developing its intrastate transmission network. The newly-awarded Tirwa and Jewar schemes add to the list of at least six TBCB transmission projects awarded over the past 4-5 years. Of these six, PGCIL is the developer for four schemes while Adani Energy Solutions Ltd is involved with two.
