The Union Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) has given its go-ahead to the proposed 4,750-mw solar park to be developed by a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC.

What could be India’s largest solar park by current thinking, the project will be developed by NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd (NTPC REL), a wholly-owned subsidiary, at the Rann of Kutch in Khavda, Gujarat.

The MNRE approval, granted on July 12, 2021, comes under Mode 8 (Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Park) of the Solar Park Scheme.

As a part of its green energy ambitions, NTPC aims to build 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032.

NTPC REL was incorporated on October 7, 2020, with a view to accelerating the renewable energy business of NTPC.

Currently, NTPC has an installed capacity of 66 GW across 70 power projects with an additional 18 GW under construction. This includes coal, gas, hydro, solar and wind power projects.

Floating solar projects

NTPC recently commissioned India’s largest floating solar project of 10 mw on the reservoir of Simhadri thermal power plant in Andhra Pradesh (See photograph). An additional 15 mw would be commissioned by August 2021.

Further, a mega 100-mw floating solar project on the reservoir of Ramagundam thermal power plant, Telangana is in the advanced stage of implementation.
