In a first for the state, Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Ltd (MPPTCL or MPTransco) has energized a 220kV power transformer using remote Human Machine Interface (HMI) technology.

In a release, MPPTCL said that a 160 MVA power transformer at the 220kV Jabalpur Nayagaon substation was energized with the help of the HMI technology SCADA control room from Jabalpur.

Pradyuman Singh Tomar, Madhya Pradesh energy minister, whilst congratulating the MPPTCL team on the achievement said that this was the first time that remote energization was done of a 160-MVA transformer in the 220kV infrastructure domain. In the past, MPPTCL has remotely energized substations and transmission lines at the 132kV voltage level.

The newly-energized 160 MVA power transformer is expected to provide strength and reliability to the transmission system of the Mahakaushal area comprising districts of Narsinghpur, Damoh, Seoni, Mandla, Dindori, Katni, etc. Additional power of around 50 MW can be made available, if required, to these districts.

HMI explained

In Human Machine Interface technology, devices are controlled remotely using humans and computer machines. The use of this technology is currently being implemented with the help of ADMS in three SCADA control centres of MPPTCL. The state utility has previously implemented this technique but at the 132kV voltage level.

Mahakaushal’s transmission capacity

The energization of this new 160 MVA transformer has taken the total transformation capacity in the Mahakaushal region (covering eight districts) to 9,097 MVA. There are 58 substations in this area that includes two at the 400kV level, nine of 220kV and 47 substations in the 132kV class. The transformation capacity at the 400kV level is 830 MVA and that on the 220kV side is 3,660 MVA. The 132kV substations have an aggregate transformation capacity of 4,607 MVA.

Innovations at MPPTCL

The Madhya Pradesh energy minister observed that MPPTCL has deployed several technical innovations for the first time in the country. Some such are the implementation of a cyber security system at the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC), a SCADA system, and drone-based patrolling of transmission lines.
