PGCIL commissions component of ERSS Scheme

Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd has announced that it has commissioned the Eastern Region System Strengthening (ERSS) Scheme –XVII (Part B).

In a brief stock exchange filing, PGCIL said that the ERSS-XVII (B) scheme was commissioned on August 8, 2023 and the official date of commercial operations stands at October 9, 2023. The notification for commercial operation was received from the competent authority on October 18, 2023, the filing added.

According to information available with T&D India, ERSS – XVII (B) was developed by PGCIL under the regulated tariff mechanism (RTM) route. The overall scheme involved capacity augmentation of several existing substations of PGCIL, spread over the eastern region – Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal — apart from other works.

The substations augmented under this scheme included Gaya, Malda, New Siliguri, Durgapur, Jeypore and Rourkela. ERSS – XVII (B) also entailed reconductoring of the existing 400kV double-circuit line from Maithon Right Bank (RB) substation to Maithon substation in Jharkhand. The scheme also involved bypassing arrangement of LILO (loop in, loop out) of several 400kV lines at Angul in Odisha.

Division of schemes

It is further learnt that ERSS-XVII was originally envisaged as a single scheme. One particular component — creation of 220/132kV voltage level at PGCIL’s 400kV Daltonganj substation in Jharkhand — was part of the original scheme. However, in view of land acquisition-related problems, it was proposed that this component be regarded as a separate scheme called “ERSS – XVII (A)”. The remaining works under the original ERSS-XVII came to be regarded as ERSS-XVII (B) that has now been commissioned.
