Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) recently announced that it has completed an intrastate power transmission scheme in Uttar Pradesh, which it had won under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) route.

The transmission scheme was developed by a project SPV called “Powergrid Rampur Sambhal Transmission Ltd” which was acquired and subsequently renamed by PGCIL on December 12, 2019. The SPV was incorporated on May 2, 2019, by bid process coordinator REC Transmission Project Company Ltd (now known as REC Power Development & Consultancy Ltd) as “Rampur Sambhal Transco Ltd.”

The transmission licence was granted by Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) on September 18, 2020.

The transmission scheme, commissioned on March 30, 2023, has the following major elements:

  • One 2×1500 + 2×500 MVA, 765/400/220kV GIS substation at Rampur (including 330 MVAR bus reactor and 240 MVAR line reactor at one 765kV feeder bay)
  • 400kV double-circuit line (Twin Moose) from 765kV Rampur GIS to Sambhal
  • One 2×500 + 2×160 MVA, 400/220/132kV GIS substation at Sambhal (including 125 MVAR bus reactor)

Second scheme in UP

This, according to information available with T&D India, is PGCIL’s second TBCB intrastate transmission scheme commissioned in Uttar Pradesh. In August 2021, PGCIL commissioned the transmission system associated with the evacuation of power from the 2×660-mw Jawahapur thermal power project in the northern state. This project was housed under project SPV “Jawaharpur Firozabad Transmission Ltd” which was later renamed to “Powergrid Jawaharpur Firozabad Transmission Ltd.” This project, as T&D India believes, is PGCIL’s first-ever intrastate power transmission scheme under the TBCB mode. As a matter of related interest, it may be mentioned that in October 2022, PGCIL also commissioned an intrastate transmission scheme in Madhya Pradesh, developed by “Powergrid Bhind Guna Transmission Ltd.” (Read more)
