Sterlite Power is keen to replicate the public-private partnership (PPP) model in the optical ground wire (OPGW) business, in other parts of the country, notes Pratik Agarwal, Managing Director, Sterlite Power.

Agarwal said this in a release that announced the acquisition of 64.98 per cent stake in Maharashtra Transmission Communication Infrastructure Ltd (MTCIL). The stake was acquired from Sterlite Technologies Ltd.

“OPGW fiber networks offer a reliable data delivery solution and help leverage the existing power utility infrastructure for telecommunications purposes. We intend to replicate this PPP OPGW model in other parts of the country. Such large-scale OPGW fiber roll-out is essential to achieve the ‘Digital India’ vision aimed at transforming the country into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy,” noted Pratik Agarwal.

MTCIL is a public-private partnership where the “public” equity is held by state power utility Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Ltd (MSETCL).

MTCIL is a PPP-based joint venture formed for OPGW fibre networks operating on the “BOOM” (build, own, operate and maintain) model. Incorporated in 2012, MTCIL operates a fiber network of around 3,162 km across 35 co-locations, serving telecom companies, ISPs and data centers, in Maharashtra.

This acquisition is in line with Sterlite Power’s strategy to establish a strong OPGW fibre network in the country utilizing right-of-way of power utilities, the release said.
