Tata Power Solar has won the mandate to build a battery energy storage system (BESS) project co-located with a solar PV farm in the Union Territory of Ladakh.

In a release, Tata Power said that its wholly-owned subsidiary Tata Power Solar Systems Ltd (popularly referred to as Tata Power Solar) has received a Notice of Award to build a 50MWp solar photovoltaic plant with 50MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project at Phyang village in Leh, UT of Ladakh.

The order value of the project is Rs.386 crore and the project is scheduled for commercial operations by March 2023.

“This project is a testament of contribution towards developing an advanced ecosystem for faster adoption of clean energy across the nation,” noted Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power.

This will be India’s first co-located large scale BESS solution, the release said, adding that it will also be the first large scale solar PV project in the UT of Ladakh. The project site is at a very high altitude – around 3,600m above sea level.

With this project, the order pipeline of Tata Power Solar now stands at around 4GWp, entailing order value of around Rs.12,414 crore.

The scope of work includes design, engineering, supply & procurement, construction of Solar photovoltaic grid-connected power plant project and BESS on a turnkey basis along with ten years of O&M services.

(Note: It is independently learnt that the order was placed by Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd (SECI) that had initiated the tendering process in February 2021.)
