Telangana builds its longest 400kV line | T&D India

Transmission Corporation of Telangana Ltd (TSTransco) has commissioned its longest 400kV line. The new double-circuit line with quad moose conductor runs 462 ckm from the 400kV Suryapet substation in Suryapet district to the 400kV Shankarpally substation in Rangareddy district. It has two components Suryapet- Nandiwanaparthi (240 ckm) and Nandiwanaparthi-Shankarpally (222 ckm).

The contracts for the 400kV Suryapet-Shakarpally line were executed by two agencies. The Suryapet- Nandiwanaparthi component was commissioned by consortium of EMC and Megha Engineering, while the Nandiwanaparthi-Shankarpally section was constructed by Jyoti Structures. The contract for the 400kV feeder bays was placed on Alstom T&D India (now GE T&D India).

This line will be very instrumental in strengthening the state’s 400kV grid. In an interaction with T&D India, a senior official of TSTransco explained that the Shankarpally-Suryapet line is currently evacuating power from Hinduja Power Corporation’s power plant in Visakhapatnam and the Dr Narla Tata Rao thermal power plant in Vijayawada. The 1,040-mw Hinduja power plant was fully commissioned in July 2016. The Dr Narla Tata project has capacity of 1,760mw with six units of 210-mw and one of 500-mw.

In future, the Shankarapally-Suryapet line will be instrumental in transmitting power from upcoming power generation stations like the 1×800-mw Kothagudem (Stage VII) project and the 4×270-mw Bhadradri power plant, both being developed by state utility Telangana Power Generation Corporation Ltd (TS Genco). To facilitate power evacuation from these plants, a 400kV substation at Julurupadu is also being constructed apart from other 400kV interconnecting lines.

TSTransco is also building 400kV power evacuation systems associated with NTPC’s upcoming 2×800-mw Telangana super thermal power project at the Ramagundam site, which already houses a 2,600-mw power plant.
